The music “nourishes” premature babies

Hace unos días, os hablábamos de Germán Sabogal, hoy os dejamos un artículo muy interesante en su web que hace referencia a un estudio sobre la música y el desarrollo de los bebés prematuros

The music helps premature babies to reduce pain and improve their development and growth, says a new research.

A team of Canadian scientists discovered that the benefits to be gained by playing music in hospitals are to calm the babies, improving their eating habits and reduce their hospitalization.

The researchers, who publish the details of the study in Archives of Disease in Childhood (Archives of Childhood Illness), argue that the music also seems to have beneficial effects on physiological aspects such as heart rate and breathing.

Valuable therapy

More and more hospitals are playing music in their rooms of infants as a method to help improve behavior and physiological health of babies and to reduce pain.

It is also thought to calm the infants and their parents, music can stabilize the baby’s condition, improve oxygen saturation and help you gain weight.

But so far not been able to verify these results.

Scientists at the University of Alberta, Canada, reviewed nine studies published between 1989 and 2006 to see how effective and valuable is the music in this type of therapy.

Six of the studies investigated if music could help the baby to reduce pain in procedures such as circumcision or needle stick injuries.

Another study examined the effect of music on nutrition rates.

And the other two studies investigated the effect of music on physiology and behavior of

newborns.

In most studies, the researchers had used lullabies with or without added sounds, such as heart beat or sound in the uterus.

And one of the studies used live music, a lullaby composed especially for a female voice accompanied by a harp.

Other hospitals usually play music written by classical masters such as Mozart.

Evidence

Although Canadian scientists were unable to reach definitive conclusions, they found what they call “preliminary evidence” of the benefits of music for infants.

“There is preliminary evidence suggesting that music may have beneficial effects on physiological, behavioral state and pain relief during painful medical procedures.

“And although there is evidence of certain therapeutic benefits of music in certain specific indicators, these benefits will be confirmed in future studies better designed,” says the scientist.

Other experts say that this research shows that music could be a simple and inexpensive way to provide benefits to premature babies.

And because preterm births have increased in recent years in much of the world, music can help with this problem.

Premature births, in which the baby is born before 37 weeks, are the cause of 75 percent of deaths of infants during the first month of life and the majority of admissions to intensive care rooms the United Kingdom.

There are several risk factors that may cause premature birth, including maternal smoking, infection in uteri or multiple pregnancies.

And these births can cause health problems long term, such as cerebral palsy, deafness, blindness, chronic lung disease and learning disabilities and behavior problems.
